How HVAC systems work is pretty straightforward. Your heating system pulls hot coolant from your engine into a heater core. Then, a fan blows cooler air over the core's fins. This process will help keep your cabin warm as you drive in cold weather. Your air conditioning system features a compressor that pressurizes the refrigerant and turns it into a hot gas. From there, the condenser cools the gas and turns it into a liquid. This fluid passes through the expansion valve and becomes a gas again. Finally, the evaporator cools the gas down. The chilled air will keep you and your passengers cool when it's hot outside.

Down the road, your HVAC systems' seals can weaken, or your AC compressor can go bad. If your heater isn't working, be sure to check for clogs or deterioration. If your air conditioner isn't working, it probably isn't cooling your vehicle properly. You might have leaking refrigerant, so you'll want to perform an inspection.
